Even before the story gets going it is abundantly clear that she is nobody to fuck with.įlowers for the Sea was my first foray into Rocklyn’s work, but it most definitely won’t be the last. She is a complicated woman who is by turns vulnerable, tough, and combative. In just over 100 pages, Rocklyn manages to create a surprisingly complex small-scale society, well-developed characters, and a rich, engrossing story. Thanks to the publisher for sending me a review copy. I’m very much looking forward to reading more from them in the future. It’s thoroughly unsettling yet impossible to put down. I don’t want to say much about the story since it is quite short, and I think doing so would veer dangerously toward spoiler territory, so we’ll just focus on the writing. This was a vicious, intense novella and one hell of a debut.
